The Heart of a Child

We often look at children as needing special care to grow into mature adults or as the victims of tragedy from things beyond control, but an experience with my grandchildren not only blessed me but convicted me.  The Lord Jesus says that "Except you become as a little child, you cannot enter the Kingdom."  We have been in a mad rush to get all of the administrative details taken care of before we leave for three weeks in Uganda.  We have been crying for volunteers and several adults say they would come and help. For one reason or another they did not show up to help us get a newsletter out before we left.

We have committed ourselves to stay with our daughter's children one day a week so we took all of our newsletters that needed to be folded, stuffed and posted with us.  Our daughter in law also visited while we were there so we had all three of our granddaughters (we also have 9 grandsons) in the same place. though they are between 4 and 10 they saw what we were doing and begged us to let them help. They loved to hear the stories of grandma and grandpa helping people in other countries.  Our middle granddaughter had given some of her birthday money to help Haitian orphans so we put her on the donor list.  As she was going through the envelopes, she found her name on one of them.  Her eyes lit up like sparklers on the on the 4th of July.  "You mean I am one of your partners!,"she said.   She loved that she was able to help other kids, but she had no idea we considered her one of our missionary people.

Her enthusiasm spread to the other two and they all begged to come with us to the post office and put the letters in the mailbox themselves.  Later, that same granddaughter came to us with one of our return offering envelopes with some Ugandan money we had given her and fifty dollars from the money she has been saving and said please help the people in Uganda when you go.  We told her that was a lot of money (it was a huge amount for her) and if she was sure she wanted to give it.  She said, "Yes", and refused to give any less to help those who didn't have much.

Truly, the Kingdom of God is moved forward by such as these.  I am in ministry, but such excitement to help in God's work challenges me in my walk.  I can understand the power of the Word of God when it says, "A child shall lead them."
